On Saturday We Will Set off on the Reconciliation March

On the occasion of the eleventh memorial of expulsion of German speaking Brno citizens we will walk in the opposite direction of the march in a symbolic gesture of reconciliation. The Mayor of Brno and other personalities including contemporary witnesses will attend the closing ceremony. This year as well the workshop for secondary school students from Brno, Germany and Austria is organized.

The Reconciliation March starts on Saturday, May 20, at 9.30 am at the memorial cross by the mass grave where the victims of Pohořelice detention camp were buried. The pilgrims will walk in the opposite direction, 32 km from Pohořelice via Ledce, Rajhrad and Modřice to Brno, Mendel Square. The pilgrims can join or leave the procession at any point thanks to the shuttle buses between Pohořelice and Brno. The ceremonial closing of Reconciliation March starts at about 6 pm in the garden of Augustinian abbey.

The Mayor of Brno, Petr Vokřál, will open the event with his speech, followed by Richard Arnolg, the Mayor of Schwäbisch Gmünd, city where significant number of expulsed Brno citizens found their homes, Daniela Hammer-Tugendhat, daughter of Fritz and Grete Tugendhat, owners of the Tugendhat villa. Representatives of partner compatriot associations will participate as well. While listening the Ferdinand-Porsche choir we will light the candles in memory of post-war victims. Later Roman Dragoun and the Ňuňu band will play.

The workshop for secondary school students from Brno, Germany and Austria is organized this year as well. Within the workshop the students will be preparing a bilingual magazine about the Reconciliation March and its historical context. Bára Procházka, former redactor of Respekt weekly magazine, head of the web portal ČT24 will lead the workshop. The students from Schwäbisch Gmünd, from two high schools from Stuttgart, sister city of Brno, and students from Horn will participate.
